Minister-Academic year could be extended to compensate for lost time

Consideration is being given to extending the 2017/2018 academic year in the wake of the industrial action by public sector teachers.

With scores of teachers off the job since Monday to protest the Government's handling of their wage claim, Education Minister Senator Ruel Reid is looking at ways to make up for lost class time. He says an announcement will be made shortly.

The Minister explained that it would not involve the current Easter term but in the Summer.

With teachers set to continue their protest Wednesday, the National Parent Teacher Association of  Jamaica says its members will continue to assist in the schools. They have been carrying out non-teaching duties since Monday.
