Mobile birth registration unit launched

The Registrar General’s Department (RGD) and UNICEF have launched a new mobile birth registration unit, which aims to provide birth certificates for children in hard-to-reach communities across Jamaica.

The mobile unit, donated by UNICEF to the RGD, will be used to conduct outreach programmes across the island.

It will provide parents and care-givers with information about birth registration and accept applications for a variety of  services provided by the RGD, such as birth, death and marriage certificates.

Other services include record updating activities such as Addition of  Father’s Particulars, Correction of  Error, and Late Entry of  Name.

Although Jamaica’s birth registration rate exceeds 98 percent, over 200,000 children still do not have a birth certificate.

This is one-fifth of  the child population.

Between 2011 and 2013, with support from UNICEF and the private sector, more than 20,000 children under age 12 were registered or received birth certificates through an islandwide drive by the RGD.
