Mombassa grass project to continue - Dairy Board

Despite an investigation being carried out by the Office of the Contractor General (OCG) into the affairs of  the Jamaica Dairy Development Board, including the distribution of  Mombasa grass to farmers, the project will not be suspended.

“That project is ongoing and it will continue to be ongoing, because that is a project that we believe can assist the Dairy Board to achieve its objective in increasing milk production in Jamaica, Donald Elvey, Chairman of Dairy Board, told RJR News.

The OCG’s probe came on the heels of questions being raised in the House of Representatives by Member of  Parliament Dayton Campbell regarding the Jamaica Dairy Development Board.

He had sought answers about the termination of the tenure of CEO Hugh Graham and the planting of 14 acres of  Mombasa grass on the farm of  Agriculture Minister Karl Samuda.

Mr. Samuda last Wednesday told the House of Representatives that he subsequently paid the Dairy Development Board $546,000 to cover the cost of the services rendered at his farm in Knollis, St Catherine.

Mr. Samuda insisted that he did not use his position as a minister to benefit from the programme.
