Montego Bay mayor hits out against critics of states of emergency

Homer Davis

Mayor of Montego Bay, Homer Davis, has hit back at naysayers, particularly members of the Parliamentary Opposition, who have questioned the rationale for declaring more states of emergency.

For Mr. Davis, the state of emergency which was declared last month in three western parishes, including St. James, has been and continues to be effective.

Speaking at a Jamaica Labour Party St. James South workers meeting on Sunday, Mr. Davis urged critics to get the facts before commenting on the anti-crime measure.

He argued that crime increased in the three months after the end of the initial state of emergency, with St. James recording 43 murders in February, March and April, or almost 15 murders per month.

However, since the latest declaration of a state of emergency in the parish, he said this figure has decreased to about eight murders per month.
