More losses expected due to arson attack at sugar cane factories

Losses from yesterday's arson attacks at several sugar estates in St. Paul, Westmoreland have escalated and there is indication there will be some fallout for the industry.

Estates operated by major suppliers of  cane were set ablaze by residents who were protesting an alleged case of  police brutality. They claimed a resident was beaten by the police.

It was reported that more than 500 acres of  cane valued at four million dollars went up in flames. The arson attacks will cause further setback to the sugar industry in western Jamaica. This is on the heels of  problems which have beset the sector.
