More security measures implemented at Jamaica's main airports

The Airports Authority of Jamaica (AAJ) has implemented additional security measures at Jamaica's two international airports in keeping with new airline regulations for flights to the United States.

In a statement Thursday afternoon, the AAJ said it will be increasing the monitoring, assessment and screening of passengers and their checked and carry-on items.

The aim is to eliminate the possibility of unapproved personal electronic devices being carried on board the aircraft.

In keeping with the new guidelines, the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay will be enhancing their capacity for Electronic Trace Detection on passengers and baggage.

The security measures in the US will take effect this month and are expected to prompt additional screening time for the 325,000 airline passengers arriving in the country daily.

Similar security measures were implemented at airports in the Bahamas as well as Trinidad and Tobago this week.
