Murder suspect charged for robberies in Manchester

A man who was taken into custody by the Manchester Police in connection with the murder of Corporal Melvin Smith on October 27 has been charged with two counts of robbery.

He is 27 year old Kemar Bennett, otherwise called Spatta, of Williamsfield, Manchester.

Mr. Bennett was charged on Saturday.

Superintendent Wayne Cameron, head of the Manchester Police, told RJR News that both robberies occurred last month at a gaming and betting establishment on Manchester Road.

The first occurred on October 14 and the other October 27, shortly before Corporal Smith was killed.

Superintendent Cameron says Mr. Bennett is expected to be charged with murder before the weekend.

He was pointed out in an identification parade on November 10.

A second suspect who was taken into custody in connection with the murder was released.
