National Security Ministry defends fight against human trafficking

The National Security Ministry is again defending its efforts to tackle human trafficking.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Major General Stewart Saunders, says the Government is fully committed in safeguarding Jamaica against human trafficking.

He adds that the Government is fully cognizant of  its obligations to combat human trafficking on all fronts.

Saunders was speaking at the opening of  a border control training seminar, hosted by the National Taskforce Against Trafficking in Persons on Friday. He explained that the seminar was indicative of  the administration’s ongoing work to safeguard Jamaicans and other nationals, deemed vulnerable to human trafficking, as well as apprehend and prosecute perpetrators.

Pivotal to this focus, he added, is the training of  frontline workers and responders, who are able to detect and handle human trafficking.

Jamaica’s Tier 2 Watch List ranking remained unchanged in the 2015 Trafficking in Persons Report of  the US State Department, released in late July.

The Justice Ministry said it was disappointed with aspects of  the report.
