Wray and Nephew has been served with a warning from the National Environment and Planning Agency, NEPA, for the discharge of effluent in the North Elim River in St. Elizabeth.
Wray and Nephew, which operates Appleton Estate, has been ordered to cease the activity immediately and take measures to mitigate the impact of the discharge.
On Saturday, NEPA responded to reports from residents and business entities of pollution along the river. The source was traced to Appleton Estate.
NEPA says investigations are continuing and further action will be taken.
PORTMORE FISH KILL
And it could take more than five days before the authorities are able to ascertain the cause of a major fish kill in Portmore, St. Catherine.
NEPA and the Marine Police yesterday responded to reports of a large quantity of fish, mainly sprat, floating in the Bridgewater canal. They are warning members of the public not to consume or buy any of the fish.
NEPA's Enforcement Officer, Richard Nelson, says samples of the fish and water were collected yesterday.
