New date: Cops in Mario Deane case to face trial in January

Mercia Fraser, the mother of Mario Deane

The trial of the three police officers involved in the Mario Deane case has been postponed until next year.

The trial was scheduled to get underway Monday morning in the St. James parish court, however, due to a delay, the court set the new date of January 18.

Mercia Fraser, Mr. Deane's mother, said she is disappointed because, although she expected the case to be put off today, she "did not expect such a long date."

Mr. Deane was beaten on August 3, 2014 while in custody at the Barnett Street police station, in Montego Bay, St. James.

He died three days later at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.

Police corporal Elaine Stewart and constables Juliana Clevon and Marlon Grant were arrested and charged with manslaughter, misconduct in a public office, and perverting the course of justice, in relation to Mr. Deane's death.
