NHT chairman stoutly defends purchase of tour attraction in Trelawny

NHT Chairman Easton Douglas
Chairman of  the National Housing Trust (NHT) Easton Douglas, is stoutly defending the decision of  the entity to purchase the tour attraction, Outameni in Trelawny.

Mr Douglas asserts that the acquisition was part of  the Housing Trust's community development programme. The NHT is being heavily criticised by the Opposition and at least one civil society group which described the $180 million purchase as a poor decision as the funds could have been spent providing housing benefits to contributors.

Mr. Douglas argues that the housing needs in Trelawny are being served, so Outameni, based on what it offers, will provide another aspect of  development which will benefit a wide range of  persons.

"When you look at the whole spectrum of development in Trelawny, it is a whole lot of housing; so what we are doing is to engage in community development, providing a combination of facilities and a mix of uses that will contribute to the development of our human resources," he declared in an interview with RJR News.

In that regard, insisted that the purchase is within the mandate of  the Trust.

The NHT Chairman also defended the process used to determine whether the Outameni purchase was a good decision.
