"No significant change" - NEPA says no increased pollution caused by Puerto Seco dolphin attraction

Richard Nelson, Senior Manager for the Environmental Management Sub-division of NEPA

Senior Manager for the Environmental Management Sub-division of the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA), Richard Nelson, has given information which is in conflict with the allegations made by some members of the Discovery Bay Community Development Committee (CDC) regarding the dolphin attractions at Puerto Seco Beach in St. Ann.

The members have alleged that the dolphin attraction has caused increased pollution at the beach, but Mr. Nelson has declared this is not supported by NEPA's data.

There have been objections to the attraction, but the criticism and advocacy by community activists have increased since its opening.

A recent letter in the Gleaner by the committee ignited another round of debate and a sharp reaction from Stafford Burrowes of Dolphin Cove who denied the claims.

Mr. Nelson explained that from NEPA's perspective, the claims cannot be verified.

"Now, what the data has showed is that...it's pretty much similar to what has been obtained from 2005 and pretty much prestine quality water and since the introduction of the dolphins, the data has shown no significant change," he revealed.

Despite this position, Mr. Nelson, who was speaking Tuesday on RJR's Beyond The Headlines, has announced that NEPA will conduct its own detailed probe into the matter.
