Not enough bed space at Bustamante Hospital

Bustamante Hospital for Children, Jamaica's sole pediatric health facility, is grappling with an increased demand for bed space.

An advisory has been issued warning that patients may experience lengthy delays getting admitted, due to the lack of enough beds.

In a release on Thursday, the South East Regional Health Authority (SERHA) said it was working to address the situation.

Dr. Andrei Cooke, SERHA's Acting Chairman,  said the Region has increased the number of medical staff  at the hospital. In addition, he said patients are being assessed to determine those that are well enough to be discharged in order to free up bed spaces.

Dr. Cooke is also appealing to parents whose children have been discharged to pick them up in a timely manner, and for members of the public to take their children to public health centres if their cases are not energencies.
