NSWMA not well placed to help with national clean-up

The Jamaican Government's plan for a national clean-up day to help control the Chikungunya outbreak could face a major hurdle because of resource constraints at the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).

The state agency, which is responsible for waste collection and disposal, said on Monday that it simply does not have enough equipment to participate in the clean up effort.

Jennifer Edwards, Executive Director of  the NSWMA,  speaking on RJR's Hotline, said unless more resources are forthcoming, the agency will not be able to take part in the clean-up.

She cited, among other things, a severe shortage of garbage trucks.
