The Organization of American States (OAS) is to deploy an electoral observation mission to Jamaica to observe the February 25 general election.
The mission will be headed by former attorney general of The Bahamas, Janet Bostwick, and will comprise 21 observers from 17 countries. OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro and Jamaica's representative to the OAS, Ambassador Ralph Thomas, yesterday signed the agreement at the Organization's headquarters. This will be the third electoral observation mission sent by the OAS to Jamaica.
The OAS expressed concern regarding violence that took place during political events this week, which resulted in the deaths of three people. The mission says it supports the stance taken by the Electoral Commission of Jamaica against political violence.
