One month extension for taxi operators

Transport operators have been granted a one month extension to renew their road licences which expire on June 30.

The new deadline is July 31.

Transport Minister Dr. Omar Davies, has also  committed to amending the seating capacity for Hackney Carriages to five persons including the driver. He says the Ministry has taken steps to have the Road Traffic Act amended regarding the seating accommodation.

The announcement follows a meeting with representatives from the Ministry of  Transport and members of  the Jamaica Association of Transport Owners and Operators (JATOO) on Friday.

However, during the meeting, the Association was reminded of condition 4 of  the Hackney Carriage licenses issued by the Transport Authority, which states that the total seating accommodation of  the vehicle shall be four including the driver.                        

Davies urged taxi operators to adhere to the existing law, and conditions of  their road licence, until the amendments are made.
