Although the system for receiving international accreditation for laboratories is available locally, the entity responsible says not many companies are utilising it.
The Jamaica National Agency for Accreditation (JANAAC) is responsible for local labs and their operations meeting international standards.
However, according to Claudette Brown, Chief Executive Officer, although 135 labs are in the country, only six have been accredited.
She says in most instances companies react to external factors in deciding whether to apply for accreditation.
She noted that steps are being taken to get legislation that will help increase the number of applications for accreditation.
