Opposition calls for resolution to Cockpit Country boundary issue

The Parliamentary Opposition is calling for a speedy resolution to the issues surrounding the boundaries of the Cockpit Country and not to allow any further mining in the area.

Senator Sophia Frazer Binns, Opposition Spokesperson on Land and the Environment, said municipal and agricultural water supply for much of western and northern Jamaica are dependent on the input of groundwater from Cockpit Country sources.

The Opposition wants the government to say whether there are plans to allow mining in the area.

Senator Frazer Binns noted that there is no reason for mining to take place in the Cockpit Country as studies show that the country has 50 years of bauxite to be mined in other areas.

She warned that any type of mining or prospecting in the Cockpit Country will result in irreversible damage to the area as well as the water and eco-systems.
