Opposition member tables motion for second law school in Jamaica

Ronald Thwaites

The call for a second law school in Jamaica has grown louder with Opposition Spokesman on Education Ronald Thwaites taking a motion to the House of Representatives on the matter.

He tabled a motion Wednesday afternoon, asking the government to support the establishment of a law school at the University of Technology (UTECH).

Mr. Thwaites said with the University Council of Jamaica having now accredited UTECH's law degree, the time is right for a second law school in Jamaica.

He said the Government of Jamaica should advance the position at the next CARICOM Heads of Government meeting, "with a view to its acceptance in accordance with the relevant treaty before the start of the next academic year."

"... And be it further resolved, that after debate, this resolution be referred to the Human Resources and Social Development Committee of Parliament so that further consultations may be undertaken," he added.

There have been calls for the Norman Manley Law School, located on the campus of the University of the West Indies in Mona, to facilitate more graduates of the UTECH law programme.

The school is run by the Council of Legal Education and trains law degree graduates to become attorneys-at-law.

However, under a CARICOM agreement, UWI law graduates enjoy automatic matriculation to the Norman Manley Law School, while graduates of other institutions must sit an examination to qualify for a place.
