The Parliamentary Opposition wants the government to conduct tests to determine whether the Asian Tiger mosquito, which transmits viruses such as dengue, are resistant to fogging.
The Asian Tiger mosquito, which is similar to the Aedes aegypti mosquito, was discovered in Jamaica in 2017.
Dr. Shane Alexis, Deputy Opposition Spokesman on Health, is questioning whether the Asian Tiger mosquito is responsible for the dengue outbreak in Jamaica.
"We need and we have to empower our research departments at the university and the public health system to be able to tell us, the clinicians, what exactly should we expect. Is it the reason why we're seeing a different kind of clinical presentation?... Is it as a result of changes or mutations based on this breed of mosquito or it just simply a variant of dengue fever?" he questioned.
However, Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton has said the vector control programme has been effective in eradicating the Asian Tiger mosquito just as it has done with the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
