Just over thirty Haitians who were spotted in a vessel off the coast of the eastern parish of Portland are now processed by officials in the parish.
The boat was spotted by fishermen who alerted the police on Saturday afternoon. The vessel was later intercepted by Coast Guard officials who intercepted the vessel.
Benny White, the Mayor of Port Antonio said he has contacted the relevant aid agencies.
“On the part of the parish council, I have alerted our Disaster Preparedness persons to make arrangements if we have to accommodate them which is usually the Adventist church and to get the medical person and the Red Cross” said Mayor White.
Last month, the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) increased its border patrols following the arrival of 25 Haitians . They were repatriated a few hours after their arrival.
