Parish council seeking to enforce use of transport centres in St. Elizabeth

Despite opposition from taxi operators about using transport centres in St. Elizabeth, the parish council says it will be seeking to enforce the use of these centres to reduce traffic congestion in various towns.

In an interview with RJR News on Thursday, Mayor Everton Fisher, Chairman of the parish council, said he was aware that some of the taxi operators are resisting attempts to have them relocated to transport centres.

"We want to make it absolutely clear - now that the park is gazetted, we are not intending to have them all over the town of Santa Cruz. They want things their way, but I as mayor will have to make sure that we have law and order in our town centres and this is one of the ways (to do that) - to get the taxis and other road users to use the transportation centres," said Mr. Fisher.

He said the council is exploring other means of enforcement, such as the clamping system, which has been implemented in other parishes, to maintain order in town centres.

A meeting has been arranged for next week involving the Council, the police and taxi operators to resolve the issue.
