Partisan politics to blame for Oppositon not supporting SOE extensions - Malahoo Forte

Marlene Malahoo Forte and Dr. Horace Chang

Marlene Malahoo Forte, Attorney General and Member of Parliament for West Central St. James, is maintaining that the decision of the Parliamentary Opposition not to support the extension of the states of emergency was based on partisan politics.

Mrs Malahoo Forte said she was left feeling angry at the decision and saddened by the inability of the government and opposition to arrive at a consensus during last Tuesday's vote in the House of Representatives.

"Instead, what we had was an attempt to score cheap political points that really does none of us any good at a time when we are confronted with serious challenges, when lives have been lost and are being lost," she lamented while speaking at a graduation ceremony in her constituency on Sunday.

She added that "too often good sense flees some of our decision makers and instead we resile to our partisan camps and the best decisions are never always made in that realm."

St. James needed extension

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang has said a further extension to the State of Emergency in St. James was necessary for the security forces to establish stronger infrastructure to maintain the gains made.

Dr. Chang said, while crime has been on the decline in St. James since the state of emergency was declared, more time was needed to reduce crime to an acceptable level.

He was speaking on RJR's call in programme Hotline Monday morning.
