Plans underway to improve efficiency of Jamaica's justice system

Jamaica's Justice Minister Delroy Chuck, has elaborated on the plans being made for improved service in the justice system, some of which could take effect this year. Many of the initiatives have already been put into motion.

Following his recent Sectoral Debate presentation, Mr. Chuck is seeking to deal with the nation's highest court, the Court of Appeal, by increasing the physical space and the number of Judges.

This process, which started a few years ago, also includes using the adjoining building currently occupied by the Accountant General.

Also, with the increased space, will be the ability to have more prosecutors for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Meanwhile, plans are advanced to secure more courtrooms in which criminal cases can be tried. The limited number of rooms at the Supreme Court has been a significant contributor to the criminal case backlog. Mr Chuck said that this should be addressed within a few months.

And, there's also a strong drive being initiated to get more qualified persons to sit as Judges to hear the increased criminal cases which are now in the system. This includes retired Judges.

According to Mr. Chuck, a new approach will be tried, and Cabinet submissions have been made so that the process can begin.
