PM Holness addresses Food For The Poor housing issue

The recent controversy over the quality of Food for the Poor housing has caught the attention of Prime Minister Andrew Holness who has now stepped in to try to ease the tension.

He met on Monday with Andrew Mahfood, Chairman of Food For The Poor Jamaica, and Chris Bicknell, his deputy.

The prime minister said the partnership has his backing and the Cabinet is also in full support of the work of Food for the Poor.

Mr. Holness said he has instructed the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation to begin early discussions with Food for the Poor for a new contract prior to the expiration of the existing one in August.

In the meantime, the prime minister said he has committed to meeting with Government Members of Parliament and will suggest the Opposition Members meet to determine any issues they may face under the current execution of  the programme.

Mr. Holness also said it was unfortunate that some Government MPs may have addressed any issue with Food for the Poor in a manner that seemed confrontational.

He said that is not the position of his administration.

Mr. Mahfood welcomed the meeting with the prime minister and pledged the organisation’s continued support.
