PM optimistic as consumer and business confidence soar

Prime Minister Andrew Holness

Prime Minister Andrew Holness has said there is a high level of optimism in Jamaica based on the findings of the third quarter Business and Consumer Survey released this week.

Consumer confidence soared to a record high for the July to September quarter, surpassing business confidence which also remained high.

Mr. Holness said the findings are a good sign as it signifies that "consumers are likely to not just spend more, but invest more, and it means that businesses will continue to invest."

The consumer confidence index rose to 172.6, the highest it has been since the survey was first done in 2001.

This was a sharp increase over the 159.1 recorded at the end of the second quarter of this year.

Business confidence remained at 140 points, the same as the last quarter, particularly due to concerns about the sliding dollar.
