PNP affiliate urges Opposition Leader to present timetable for departure

An affiliate of the opposition People's National Party (PNP) is calling for Portia Simpson Miller to present a timetable for when she will step down as President of the party.

In a statement on Tuesday, the PNP's caucus of young professionals, the Patriots, said the time had come for the Party to embark on a programme of renewal. It wants Simpson Miller to publicly state a firm timetable for her departure.

If this is not done, the Patriots say delegates at the PNP's upcoming annual conference should be given the opportunity to vote, in secret ballot, on whether she should remain PNP President.

"The Patriots commend the tremendous contribution of the party leader, however we also recognise that we have just suffered an election defeat and we think that it is important for a timetable to outline steps to be taken for renewal," said Javette Nixon, chairman of the Patriots.

The statement also noted a call in some quarters for disciplinary action to be taken against Nixon. This is in relation to public comments surrounding Simpson Miller’s decision to seek re-election as PNP President.

The group said it maintains full confidence in Nixon as Chairman.
