There is mounting pressure from the People's National Party (PNP) for the removal of Chairman of Central High School Henry Morant who is facing a murder charge.

Speaking at a media briefing at the PNP headquarters in St. Andrew Monday morning, PNP caretaker for Clarendon Central Zulieka Jess said Mr. Morant should resign within the next 24 hours, otherwise the minister with oversight for Education should act swiftly and decisively to demand his resignation.

The PNP is demanding answers about the process that was used to appoint Mr. Morant as Chairman.

Pointing out that member of Parliament Mike Henry had been the one who recommended Mr. Morant sit on the school board, Ms Jess questioned whether there had been any due diligence checks to ensure that Mr. Morant was "fit and proper" for the job.

"We believe that it is imperative that Mr. Henry indicate and advise us, the members of the public as to the factors, the reasons operating on his mind when he made the recommendation for an individual charged with murder to sit and preside over the affairs of a government run school board," she demanded.

Teachers at Central High School have been calling for Mr. Morant's removal.
