PNP's S.E. St. Mary candidate contemplates legal action against Young Jamaica

The opposition People's National Party's (PNP) candidate for St Mary South East, Dr Shane Alexis, is contemplating legal action against the Jamaica Labour Party's (JLP) youth arm, Young Jamaica, following allegations it made in a statement to the media about him.

The PNP said contrary to the statement - "Dr. Alexis was NOT granted a scholarship through the Jamaica/Cuban programme."
Under the programme, Jamaicans get to study in Cuba free of cost.

The PNP says Alexis has instructed his attorneys to pursue legal redress in this matter.

It added that Alexis and his family have been hurt by what it calls false and defamatory charges contained in the media statement issued by Young Jamaica.

The statement noted that Dr. Alexis studied at his family's expense.

However, in a statement on October 10, the PNP said Alexis completed his undergraduate education in Jamaica and thereafter received a scholarship to study medicine in Cuba.

According to the PNP, Dr Alexis' attorneys have written to Young Jamaica.

They are demanding that Young Jamaica issue and publish a full and complete retraction and public apology to Alexis, in terms to be approved by him.

Young Jamaica must respond by October 17.
