Police claim to have smashed major scam, involving counterfeit shoes, clothing brands

The Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation Unit, (C-TOC) is investigating what is believed to be a multi-billion dollar scam, in which counterfeit shoes and clothes are being sold in Jamaica.

The latest information follows the arrest two weeks ago of a Chinese businesswoman, at a warehouse and store on Orange Street in downtown Kingston.

The accused, Lan Yan, appeared before the Corporate Area Criminal Court on Friday morning, on charges of  breaches of  the Trademark and Customs Act.

Miss Yan was charged after J$50 million  worth of  counterfeit goods were seized at her store. They included clothing and shoes with the Nike, Adidas and Puma labels. Additional items, with the Levi's and Vans brand names, were also seized.

These international companies have since hired the local law firm, Myers, Fletcher and Gordon, to watch proceedings on their behalf.

Miss Yan is to return to court on April 23. A Stop Order has been imposed, barring her from leaving the island.
