Investigators are following several leads into last week's armed attack and robbery of a group of Chinese visitors to the island.
Members of the Police High Command, lead by Assistant Commissioner Devon Watkis, met with representatives of the Chinese community on Tuesday to update them on the probe.A team representing the victims of the robbery was also present.
Watkis told the meeting, that Senior Superintendent Cornwall Ford, who heads the Flying Squad, will be playing a pivotal role in the investigation. Detectives are optimistic that those involved in the robbery will be caught soon.
It was reported that the Chinese nationals who arrived in the island to carry out a special project at Hope Botanical Gardens, was attacked and robbed by armed thugs. Two members of the group were injured and had to be treated at hospital.
And stemming from the meeting, the police say they will be implementing measures to protect the victims of last week's attack and the local Chinese community in general.
They include the appointment of a security liaison officer from the JCF to meet regularly with the victims and a representative to discuss and coordinate police support on security matters.
An assessment has also been done on the homes, places of business and areas where the victims regularly travel, and dedicated police patrols have been put in place to ensure their protection. In addition, the police have requested a list of all Chinese companies conducting projects with the Government.
These will also be subject to a risk assessment and security resources will be committed as needed.
In a statement on Tuesday, Police Commissioner Owen Ellington said the High Command is aware of the importance of Jamaica/ China relations and remains committed to protecting Chinese nationals and their businesses in Jamaica.
