Police hunt man who opened fire on MP's bodyguards

Members of the security forces are searching sections of Western Kingston, for a man believed to be linked a shooting incident on Tuesday, involving two bodyguards of Member of Parliament for Western Kingston, Desmond McKenzie.

The man is believed to have been shot and wounded during a reported exchange of gunfire on Oxford Street in downtown Kingston.

He later fled the scene is believed to be in hiding in a nearby community.

According to McKenzie, the drama unfolded while he was at a Funeral Home making preparations for the upcoming burial of a 12-year-old boy who was killed more than a week ago on Chestnut Lane in the community.

“On investigation I discovered that two of my security detail was engaged in a gun battle with about three men, following investigations it was discovered that one my security officers  - the gunmen attempted to rob him.”

McKenzie says during the reported confrontation, the policeman was able to disarm the gunman. One of the alleged robbers was reportedly shot and wounded before they fled on foot.

The MP says based on information, the police have a clear idea who the perpetrators are and their possible hideout. However, he dismissed reports that he was the subject of the attack.  

“Earlier on it was said I was actually physically attacked, while I was there I was not a part of what took place. The training of the policemen has to be commended because the actions of the security detail was able to save (the policeman’s) life.”

The Police High Command has also commended McKenzie's bodyguards, for what was described as their swift action and alertness, in their response to the men who launched a gun attack on them.

Commissioner of Police, Owen Ellington, in a statement issued by the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) said he was relieved that law-abiding citizens were not injured in the incident.

The Police Commissioner lauded the actions of the bodyguards in preventing the men from getting access to the Member of Parliament.

The police are reporting that a Beretta 9 millimeter pistol, containing 16 rounds was seized during the incident.
