Police impersonator behind bars

A 56 year-old man who pretended to be a police officer and who tried to arrest a motorist for breaching the Road Traffic Act, is now behind bars.

He was arrested on Wednesday during a police operation in New Haven, St. Andrew.

It's reported that on September 12 a motorist was travelling on  Washington Boulevard when he was stopped by the man who identified himself  as a member of  the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

He reportedly told the motorist he had committed several breaches of the Road Traffic Act including Dangerous Driving.

He then solicited J$20 thousand from the motorist in order not to prosecute him.

Arrangements were made for the money to be paid in Spanish Town, St. Catherine later that day.

The police were contacted and a sting operation set up.

During an attempt to arrest the man he sped away, damaging several vehicles including a patrol car.
