Assistant Commissioner Fitz Bailey, head of the Area Two police
Assistant Commissioner Fitz Bailey, head of the Area Two police, has sought to assure the residents of Brown's Town, St. Ann that investigators are closely monitoring Western Unions in the parish amid concerns that another outlet could be closed due to suspected fraudulent transactions.
One Western Union outlet in the area was closed last week.
Speaking on Tuesday night at an Area Two media briefing, ACP Bailey said the St. Ann police have arrested several persons suspected of being involved in lottery scamming.
He insisted that efforts would continue to identify and locate others who are involved in the illegal activity. However, he suggested that while residents may be fearful, he does not believe that lottery scamming is a problem in the division at this time.
Western Union last week confirmed an RJR News report that it has closed some of its outlets in Jamaica in response to a high number of suspected fraudulent transactions at the locations.
In addition to Brown's Town, three are in Montego Bay, one in Falmouth, one in Lucea and another in Spanish Town.
