With the ISSA/GraceKenedy Boys' and Girls' Athletics championships hitting its climax today, the Police are announcing that major plans are in place to tackle any security risk being posed by the expected crowd at the National Stadium and surrounding areas.
Acting Head of Operations for the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Senior Superintendent Calvin Allen, is warning that the police have initiated a comprehensive strategy aimed at clamping down heavily on rowdy behaviour and breaches of the peace by patrons.
Traditional school rivalry has in the past caused significant challenges for the police.
It is expected that the area will become inundated with thousands of persons including patrons, officials and vendors.
Allen told RJR News that the police have used the knowledge of previous events to implement this year's plan.
“We have done our analysis, we know exactly what went for the previous Champs…. Police will be along all the critical routes. We are aware of things that might happen in Half Way Tree and Cross Roads. Our presence will be all over….and so our strategies are so aligned.”
A warning has also been extended to the carrying of illegal weapons or dangerous implements.
“So if you are found with any - it’s not that the weapon will only be confiscated but you will be in problems. No form of knives, ice picks or firearms. Whether you arei n the Stadium or along the vicinity. It’s not only a matter of traffic clow but also the security and safety of everyone going to the championships as well as our visitors,” Allen said.
