Police raid Caricel

Radio Jamaica News has been informed that a police raid was conducted at telecoms firm Caricel.

The entity had halted operations following an Appeal Court decision handed down in March last year.

Police cordoned the gates of the building and reportedly conducted searches of the premises as well as several employees and their possessions.

The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) had said, based on the ruling, Symbiote is not authorised to own or operate a business, nor is it permitted to provide telecommunications or other specified services, as defined in the Telecommunications Act.

According to the OUR, the Court of Appeal denied Symbiote's application for a stay of the Minister of Technology's decision to revoke its telecommunications licences.

The court also set aside the order granting it permission to appeal.
