The Negril Police along with a private security company and a team from the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo) on Monday carried out an operation to seize illegally reared horses in the parish.
Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of Negril, Adrian Hamilton, told RJR News that the owners have been illegally rearing horses for the past 7 years.
According to ASP Hamilton the owners have been renting the horses to operators who provide rides on beaches in Negril.Hamilton says the practice is not in accordance with the Keeping of Animals Act.
He explained that eight horses were seized and taken to a pound in St. Ann.
The owners will have to obtain permits from the Parish Council before the horses are released.
