Police seize illegally reared horses in Negril

The Negril Police along with a security company and a team from the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo), on Monday morning, carried out an operation to confiscate illegally reared horses in the parish.

Adrian Hamilton, Assistant Superintendent of Police in charge of Negril, told RJR News that the owners have been illegally rearing horses for the past seven years and renting them to operators who provide horse-rides to visitors along beaches in Negril.

ASP Hamilton says the practice is not in accordance with the Keeping of Animals Act.

“No person shall, within the prescribe area, keep any animal - that’s within the act, and horses in this case is a prescribed animal under the act (so) we carried out these operations in an effort to seize those horses," he said.

ASP Hamilton explained that eight horses were seized and taken to a pound in St. Ann. He said the operation is ongoing and the police is committed to stopping all illegal horse-riding activities in the parish.

Owners will have to obtain and provide permits from the Parish Council before the horses are released.
