Assistant Superintendent of Police Warren Williams, is urging Jamaicans to be vigilant against phishing scams that use electronic messages to steal personal information.
The ASP, who is Head of the Communications Department at the Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime (C-TOC) Investigation Branch says criminals have been using phishing emails to steal financial information and divert funds.
A trend has been identified in which cybercriminals compromise business processes with phishing emails, based on this, he is imploring persons not to open emails that appear suspicious or sent by individuals they do not know.
Williams says the Government is employing a multi-dimensional approach to address the problem.
He said the Division has been making strides with fighting cybercrime in Jamaica and has employed a proactive approach that is preventative in order to secure the digital domain.
Meanwhile, head of the Jamaica Cyber Incident Response Team in the Ministry of Technology, Dr. Moniphia Hewling, says cybercriminals are using banks to hack persons' data.
She disclosed that there was a phishing email purported to be coming from the Bank of Jamaica,
