Police warn against using flashing lights on campaign vehicles

Campaign managers for Jamaica's two major political parties are being advised by the Police High Command to instruct their workers and supporters to desist from using flashing lights on campaign vehicles.

In a statement on Saturday, the High Command said it has observed that campaign vehicles have been outfitted with green and orange flashing lights, similar to the lights used by emergency vehicles. This, police stressed, is a breach of  the Road Traffic Act.

In addition, the High Command said having non emergency vehicles using flashing lights may cause confusion to road users and may allow criminals to deceive the public and impersonate the police and other emergency services.

According to the High Command, a similar practice has been observed among bus and taxi operators, as well as other motorists who have been using blue lights.

Only the police, the Jamaica Fire Brigade and ambulances can lawfully use emergency lights.

The police are therefore warning that anyone found engaging in this practice will be prosecuted.
