Political parties urged to commit to key issues

Five issues affecting Jamaica have been identified by members of  the private sector and civil society as necessary to improve the country.

In a letter to the Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller  and Leader of  the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party, Andrew Holness,  the combined group listed five demands it wants the next Government to tackle.

They are fiscal responsibility, price stability, social safety net, public/private partnerships and ease of doing business.

We have observed in our experience in Jamaica that the consequence of fiscal irresponsibility is public indebtedness and serial fiscal crisis. It is time to put that behind us and to impose fiscal responsibility,” said Co Executive Director of the Caribbean Policy Research Institute, Damien King.

The issues were outlined at a press conference at the headquarters of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) on Thursday.

King, who chaired the forum, said the issues outlined are the consequences of having a high inflation economy.

“This is not an exhaustive list, there are many many other areas of public administration that were of great importance.”

He said the groups focused on matters that are “as non controversial as possible” at this time.
