Desmond McKenzie, Minister of Local Government and Community Development, has said $10 million is to be allocated to carry out emergency clean-up and repairs at Port Antonio market in Portland.
During a tour of the facility on Friday, Mr. McKenzie said the market was in a deplorable condition and efforts will begin shortly to carry out the repairs.
He said there are areas of the market that need to be dealt with urgently.
The local government minister wants conditions at the Port Antonio market to be significantly improved in four months.
Mr. McKenzie also visited the Buff Bay market to get a first-hand view of the facility. He said an assessment is to be done of that market and disclosed that when the repairs are completed, the Portland Municipal Corporation will conduct sensitisation meetings with vendors and stakeholders regarding the use of the market.
