Portland residents affected by flooding to get assistance

Paul Thompson, Mayor of Port Antonio

Paul Thompson, Mayor of Port Antonio, has said the Ministry of Social Security is carrying out an assessment to determine the level of  assistance to be provided to persons whose houses were flooded in Portland following heavy rain over the last two days.

Several houses in the Spring Gardens, Orange Bay and Settlement communities were flooded either due to drainage problems or a river overflowing its banks.

Mr. Thompson said the National Works Agency (NWA) has cleared roads that were blocked by landslides and other debris.

Windsor Castle had been affected after a river apparently changed course and flooded the roadway, while the Buff Bay area had reported landslides.

Mr. Thompson said a site visit is planned so that mitigation work can be carried out.
