Private sector being engaged in crime fighting efforts, minister insists

Dr. Horace Chang
National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang is insisting that he has been collaborating with the business community in tackling crime.
During his sectoral presentation in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, Dr. Chang expressed confidence that the government's strategy to fight crime would be successful, particularly because of  the collaboration with the private sector.
However, the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) and Small Business Association of Jamaica (SBAJ), have expressed surprise at the statement.
Speaking at a post sectoral media briefing at the National Security Ministry on Wednesday, Dr. Chang said several meetings have been held with the PSOJ, including one on Wednesday morning.
"As minister, I've had at least one meeting with their security committee and have regular discussions with the president of the PSOJ," he purported.
Restoring JCF image
In the meantime, Dr. Chang has given a commitment to restore the image of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).
He said the government will be investing more in "both the human and infrastructure resource" of the Force as it seeks to enhance crime fighting capabilities.
"It is critical, I think, in ensuring that whatever we do as a country, we invest and build a police force that can carry out its mission to protect and serve effectively," he said.
The minister promised that the issue would be "overcome almost immediately."
