Private sector meeting with political parties regarding end of SOEs

Members of Jamaica's private sector groups are holding meetings with the leadership of the two main political parties about the impending end of the States of Emergency.

On Tuesday, the Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA), the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ) and the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce (JCC), issued a joint statement calling for a meeting with the parties.

On Thursday afternoon, PSOJ President Howard Mitchell said the organisation was in meetings with members of the People's National Party (PNP).

He said meetings were to be held with the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) after.

Meanwhile, the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) has joined the call for a continuation of the States of Emergency.

The JHTA on Thursday said it is concerned about the decision of the Parliamentary Opposition to withdraw its support for the security measures in St. James, the St. Catherine North Police Division and sections of the Corporate Area.

In a release, the JHTA said the extension of the Zones of Special Operation in Mount Salem, St. James and the West Kingston community of Denham Town is not enough to address crime.

It added that the States of Emergency have been instrumental in curbing crime.

The JHTA said, while the security measures are not a long term crime fighting strategy, it is concerned about what will happen without an effective transition.

The Association said the government and opposition should come together in a non-partisan way to finalise a sustainable crime prevention plan.
