Public sector workers restive

Oneil Grant

Public sector workers are restive because of the government's failure to make an offer in relation to transport allowances and fringe benefits.

The Jamaica Civil Service Association (JCSA) says there is a lack of cooperation from the Finance Ministry although the matter has been before them since March 2017.

JCSA President Oneil Grant says a meeting that was scheduled for Wednesday to discuss the benefits, was abruptly cancelled by the ministry, causing further frustration for the workers.

According to Mr. Grant, the union cannot guarantee normality in the public sector if an agreement is not arrived at by Wednesday.

"The intended response from the public officers is that they will curtail their use of vehicles for doing government business. So people will generally go into office and sit down and not go out to travel," he declared.

The UCASE president has urged the ministry to meet with the workers so a solution can be had on the matter.
