RIverton City Landfill fire - Canadian company to help test air quality

A Canadian company is to assist with speedy air quality tests in the wake of the fire at the Riverton City Dump.

Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Marion Bullock Ducasse, says the Health Ministry set up two additional sampling sites.

They are located at the York Park Fire Station and an office on Spanish Town Road.

The samples were collected on Saturday and the results should be available this week.

Bullock Ducasse added t hat the smoke will have varying effects on persons.

She says it is difficult for the Health Ministry to determine what is being emitted.

“There are also other compound that we know are released from fires of this nature. We know some of them such as Benzene, for prolonged exposure  - they are called carcinogens, then can go on to form some cancers

However, she said the Ministry does not expect long-term effects because the exposure would not have been prolonged.
