Roving senior health care worker to be assigned to Bustamante Hospital for Children

The Ministry of  Health will be seeking to have a roving senior health care worker at the Bustamante Hospital for Children to deal with visitors who become agitated due to long waiting hours.

The measure, which Chief  Medical Officer, Dr. Winston De La Haye says will be aggressively pushed, is among several under consideration following Wednesday night's incident at the hospital in which a female clerk was injured.

She suffered injuries to an eye after a man, who is the parent of a patient, reportedly became upset over the long waiting hours and shattered a pane of glass.

“We must ensure that senior persons are present on small shifts… that seniority comes with the ability to anticipate or identify someone who is at risk of becoming violent…” said De La Haye.

He says another measure is to increase the staff complement at the Bustamante Hospital for Children.

Wednesday's incident resulted in a two day protest by workers.

The Ministry of Health has since installed shatter proof windows and has indicated that it is considering having a police post at the institution.
