Marlene McDonald
Trinidad and Tobago's former public administration minister, Marlene McDonald, who is facing several fraud-related charges, has been offered bail in the sum of $2 million.
However, Ms. McDonald was unable to attend a magistrate's court hearing on Monday because of illness.
Her four co-accused, who are also facing several charges of conspiracy to defraud the government, were also offered bail.
They are due to return to court on September 9.
The magistrate read 49 charges with the offences ranging from conspiracy to defraud the government, and money laundering, dating back to several years ago when Ms McDonald was part of the People's National Movement administration.
The 61 year old was sacked on Monday by Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley.
The allegations are that she approved millions of dollars in funds for organisations linked to at least two of the accused.
In the meantime, Dr. Keith Rowley, Trinidad and Tobago's Prime Minister and leader of the People's National Movement (PNM), has removed Mrs McDonald as the party's deputy leader, less than 24 hours after he fired her from his Cabinet.
Dr. Rowley announced the move in a one paragraph post on his Facebook page.
