Senate votes to extend state of emergency in St. Catherine North

The Senate on Friday voted to extend the state of emergency in St. Catherine North by another three months.
 
It will remain in effect until January 2, 2019.
 
Members of the Lower House gave approval on Wednesday.
 
Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the enhanced security measures in the St. Catherine North Police Division have resulted in a 68 per cent reduction in murders and shootings.
 
He reported that for the period March 18 to September 2, the division recorded 27 murders and 22 shootings.
 
Some 82 murders and 72 shootings were recorded over a period of 168 days prior to the state of emergency.
